A fine and premium pub experience of course wouldn’t be complete without an excellent drinks offer. MD to the group Craig Bancroft is one of the UK’s leading wine experts and a Master Inn Holder. He is developing a very special list alongside Nick Adams (Master of Wines) and Adam Pawlowski (Northcote’s Sommelier). Of course a cracking selection of local cask ales will share centre stage.
We constantly change our selection of local ales to offer an interesting variety of the region’s styles and to match our seasonal menu’s on offer. Please feel free to pop up to the bar or ask a member of staff what we have on the pumps today and we will be more than happy to offer you a taster.
Our House Ale – ‘The 1816′, 3.8% ABV
Brewed for us by our friends at Daniel Thwaites and named after the year the pub was built, the 1816 is a light session ale with a lovely balanced hop and malt finish. Chosen Specially to accompany our famous fish & chips that it washes down with real relish.
Wainwright Ale, 4.1% ABV
This entrancing local beer commemorates the remarkable Blackburn native Alfred Wainwright MBE, author of the celebrated mountain walks in Cumbria. Made with Marris Otter pale malt and hopped with Hersbrucker and Magnum varieties, it has a fruity pear drops aroma with lightly toasted malt and hop resins. There’s weetabix style grain in the mouth, tart fruit and spicy hops, followed by a long quenching finish with sappy malt and fruit balanced by gentle but persistent hop bitterness.
Thwaites Original, 3.6% ABV
A beer that’s original today as it was in 1807 when Daniel Thwaites himself began brewing. A clean, dry tasting and refreshing session bitter with a glowing amber appearance. Brewed using premium grade Maris Otter malt and a blend of traditional English Hops including Goldings and Fuggles to give a malty flavoured beer with a delicate dry finish.
The ‘Highwayman’ Beer Paddle
Having trouble deciding or just having the one? Choose any three of our ales and we serve them up on a beer paddle, a third of a pint each for the same price as a single pint.
The Highwayman is proud to be a Cask Marque accredited pub, serving ale at perfect temperature and condition.
